I saw this on The Economist website, for those that are interested:

Each Thursday by 9pm London time (4pm New York time) the full print edition will be available to download for reading on your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch, with all articles fully cached for reading even when you don’t have an internet connection.

We have reformatted the newspaper to make the most of these devices while retaining the familiar feel of The Economist, with all the articles, charts, maps and images from each week’s print edition. And we have included our audio edition so you can listen to every article, read by professional newscasters, with easy switching between reading and listening.

The apps are free to download from the App Store and everyone receives the editor’s highlights — a weekly selection of must-read articles.

Full digital access to subscribers

Full access to The Economist on iPhone and iPad will be free for current print or online subscribers.

If you have already activated your Economist online account, you will be able to use the same email address and password to access The Economist via the apps.

If you have not already activated your Economist online account, you can activate it from within the app. You will need to register or log in first then activate full access using your customer reference number (found on the address label of your weekly print copy).

If you are not a subscriber you can purchase a digital subscription from within the app or subscribe online

A digital subscription includes full access to The Economist on iPhone and iPad and The Economist online.

EDIT: My apologies if this belongs in the iPad Apps section. I saw it too late.

Is there any way to read this for free?

You can get the same content for free by subscribing to the RSS feeds, or by just using their website, but you can't view that content on the Economist app.

This is great. I hope in the future they will give a discount if you opt out of the print edition. It always arrives 4 or 5 days late to me.

EDIT: The app is very good and it's handy to be able to download the whole magazine to read offline. Also allows you to down load the audio edition. Well done, Economist!

Everything will be digital eventually. I would expect to see the digital market share become 65% by the end of the decade.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/532.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0.5 Mobile/8B117 Safari/6531.22.7)

I requested that they release such a beast when the iPad first came out. YEEESSSS!!! Love it, I've been reading it on the train today. Finally, my favorite news magazine on my favorite device!

+1

Already my favorite app. I bought a digital subscription for $29/quarter to see if I miss buying the occasional paper copy. So far, I cant say that I will. Having the audio built in makes this a great app on iPhone too.
