my sister might be getting one soon, but she will need it to last up to 6 years is that possible for a macbook?

also is it a good time to get one now or will there be a new one coming out soon?
 
it will just be typical stuff like homework, music, movies, internet, facebook
 
The machine itself should last 6 years. You can still find working iBook G4's and PowerBook G4's from 2004 now. And yes, they will do email, word processors and the internet, but the newest software (latest OS, latest browsers) would not run on them, even YouTube will not run well on them.

6 years is a long time. Hard to say if today's MacBook will run everything your sister will need in 2016. But if she takes care of the machine, she can sell it at a good price down the line, should she need to upgrade before 2016.
 
We had a Powerbook (Pizmo) that lasted almost nine years. Yes, we had to replace the battery and, eventually, the hard drive. We sold it for parts year before last when the display went. But it stuck with us a long time. Six years is certainly not out of the question for a MacBook.
