I just upgraded my MP 2009 with the Radeaon HD 5870. I'm planning to reinstall OSX in the future. Since the drivers for the 5870 came with 10.6.5 update can I re-install OSX from the 10.6.0 disc? Or do I need to hold on to my old 3870 for the install?

If you have a spare disk then could carbon copy clone the existing boot disk to that and then use that as the boot disk.

Could then install a clean 10.6 to your original boot disk but not boot off it and then patch with the combo update to 10.6.5 that should have the drivers in it that you need. Then tell the Mac Pro to boot off that disk instead.

Or you could just build with the 3870 inside, patch the system and then insert the 5870 afterwards, whichever you think is easier.

I managed to perform a clean install of 10.6 with the 5770. Apple applied a generic ATI driver during the install. I then updated to 10.6.5, where the 5770 was properly recognized.

Not sure if it's the same for the 5870 though I can't imagine it being different.
