Today on my lunch break I walked into my local Apple store and was startled to find out they had a 5870 upgrade kit in stock. I bought it thinking I was the luckiest guy in the world. I should have known better.

I install it, boot my computer, no display.
My monitor is asleep.
The computer powers up, makes the startup noise, the fans on the card are spinning, but no video.
I'm using the DVI port, not the MDP (if that helps).

I put my GT120 back in, everything boots normally.
I'm using slot 1.

Is there something I need to do on the OS side before I swap cards?

Help appreciated!!!!

Have you booted with both cards in - monitor plugged into the GT120? That way you can at least check the system profiler to see if the 5870 is being recognised by the system?

Also, if it is, could you perhaps try moving the monitor connection from the GT120 to the 5870 while the system is running?

Both power cables are pushed in until they clicked (at both ends of the cable, so 4 clicks).

I'm on 10.6.5. Software update only shows me updated HP printer drivers and the latest safari.

I reinstalled my GT120 in slot 1 to ensure the slot hadn't been damaged when I installed the card. It worked fine.

I put the 5870 back in slot 1, put the gt120 in slot 3, rebooted. I get video on the GT120, not on the 5870.

In system profiler, it only shows the GT120 in the PCI section.

Thanks for the suggestions, i'm at a loss....

eh, never mind, looks like you already got to my advice. Sounds like you've got a dud card, call apple!

Just my 2 cents.

I just got my 5870 in the mail and installed it last night on an 08.
I had it attached to the 27" ACD through MDP.

It took like a reboot or two to get it work for whatever reason.

My gtx285 actually came DOA :/

I was about to call it a night, but decided to give it one more shot.

I removed and reinstalled everything and then rebooted.

Voila, it's up and running.

I guess something wasn't seated properly (17th times a charm).

Thanks for your help everyone. A little encouragement goes a long way.

:D
