Don't see what the issue is with the built in screen protector anyways? I've never had an issue with mine and the response is flawless even with front/rear screen protectors on my phone.

True, but after sometime of use, dust also has a tendency to get in there, so this would also sorta prevent another problem. Yes it may not be "Maximum Protection" anymore, but on an iPhone, I feel the screen should be unhindered

I agree with the whole defeating the purpose argument, but did you try running your iPhone 4 naked and then try to view it through that membrane? It's painful. Also, if dusts gets between the membrane and the phone, it will scratch, it happened to me. So I can see both sides of the argument.

Personally, I would do a Zagg shield rather than that membrane.

Yeah but now that you have removed the front, even more dust is going to get i there since the case is not as tight as the previous generation.

You essentially have just destroyed the whole purpose of buying or using the Defender in the first place.

Terrible idea.

Not Really, My defender's been like this for a couple weeks and I've noticed less dust inside when I take it off.

A zagg won't fit with the ob defender on because its kinda thick. A regular static screen protector works fine

All good points. Although I have not popped out the membrane (as I am using the bumper only right now) everyone has come up with great points and some I hadn't thought of.
