i was wondering am I able to turn on 3g service today and turn around and cancel it so it doesnt auto renew and Ill still have 30 days to use the data i bought? thanks

Yes. If you activate today and cancel today, your service will end in 30 days and not renew automatically. The only time it activates automatically is if your contract expires and you have NOT canceled.
When ever I activate, I set an alarm in my Blackberry to remind me the day before it will re-activate so I have the opportunity to avoid it.
The activation/cancellation utility works quite well so there is no reason to cancel so quickly as the day before does the same thing and you never know, you might want to buy another month. It is up to you as it works well either way.
