Virus in Windows Vista on bootup

how do i get into safe mode? if not would it just be smarter to delete the partition with windows?

this is the issue

Hit fn-F8 as soon as the Windows splash screen comes up.

ended up not being able to boot in any type of safe mode

ended up deleting the partition
didn't really lose anything file wise
should that completely eliminate the virus?

it was either a virus, something to do with that sophos av for mac or possibly something to do with realplayer for mac
