what are you using to convert AVI to mp4/m4v etc?

I'm doing fine with QT Pro but am wondering if there are better options because even a 700mb avi file takes 2 hrs to convert.

Seriously that long?

I regularly convert 45min 350mb shows - less than 6mins

Just tried to convert the hangover - 1.2GB avi, 14mins
 
You could just get the free VLC app to play those files, or use apps such as Cinex, AVPlayer, OPlayer that play any type of file without any problem. I prefer AVPlayer myself. It costs about $2.99 but it's worth it.

Why don't you buy either CineXplayer or OPlayer off the app store? Then you don't have to convert.

I'm not sure if you can get the VLC app on the app store for free.

I am sure, but the functionality is pretty basic. You can't even zoom to fill the screen using VLC. CineXPlayer does that though, but the playback wasn't as silky smooth as it was using VLC. AVPlayer however, is both silky smooth, has great image quality and can zoom to fill the screen. OPlayer is an alternative too, but it had dull colors compared to VLC/AVPlayer.
 
I primarily use AirVideo to stream it directly to the iProduct from my PC using live conversion.

VLC if you want to store it on the device in native format.
 
Handbrake. On the very rare occasion Handbrake can't/won't handle the file I'm trying to convert, Super works as well. But Handbrake's always what I go to first.

I use ffmpeg. If that doesn't work because of the newer DRM'd AVI codecs for video and audio I'll use wondershare.

Wondershare doesn't get a compact enough size so I run it a second time through ffmpeg.
 
Definitely just use VLC for watching ahemfreeahem movies that you downloaded. So much easier to skip the whole converting step.
 
Yeah I've been using QT Pro to convert and it works well. Just sometimes takes time that's all. VisualHub I find to be the best BUT it's not in development anymore. Old versions still work fine though if you can find them on your favorite torrent sites.

Honestly there are so many of these video converter apps out and they have the worst Windows looking UI too. I think on the Mac VisualHub and iSquint and Handbrake are the most native on the Mac platform.

The other question I have is are there people out there ripping the iTunes rental stream? Can this be done? I know people have been setting the dates back on their computers to get unlimited viewing times but that's not what I want to do. The iTunes purchase prices for movies are insane. *For a few bucks more you can get the real 1080p blu-ray disc complete with Japanese and English audio and subtitles.

In Japan:

iTunes movie rental ￥400円
iTunes movie purchase ￥2,000円 <- nuts

p.s. I'm converting a 556mb flv file to m4v right now. Over 1 hr. Much too long. 2007 MacBook C2D / 4GB

For DVD rips, I use Handbrake(Apple TV preset, 'Large file size'=unchecked).
For regular video files I use the Air Video app(Maximum settings).

Basically, everything gets converted(short term pain there) so all video is iOS compatible.
I'm on Windows 7, and use VLC/WMP to view these files on my PC.

I've been trying to use ffmpeg to convert AVI and FLV files to the iPad.
This only works for standard-definition videos and not HD videos, which are my goal, for some reason.
