iPhone will not backup data

The current version of my iPhone 3 is a 3.1.3. Every time I try to update it, it has trouble backing up my phone. It says, "An error occurred while backing up this iPhone." It also said if I continue without a backup, it will result with the loss of all contents on the phone. I would really like to update to version 4.2 without losing all the contents on my phone. Any suggestions?
