Does jailbreaking pose any privacy threat issues?

Seems like a lot of people are using downloadable files to jailbreak. Is this safe?

Could the creator of a jailbreak file have some sort of malicious code hidden in that can track info or personal pieces of information over the network or wireless pathways?

I thought I remember reading a jailbreak tutorial a few months ago that suggested to never download a jailbreak file like this without building some file of your own first.
 
The suggestion is to verify a distributed jailbreak against an SHA1 "hash" file that the authors post along with the file. Since any file modified from its original state would fail the hash check, you'd know whether the one you got was genuine or not.

Sure, the creators could. But the iPhone Dev Team (and all the major players) have been pretty honest so far, and seem to keep each other honest. Dishonest purveyors are singled out and identified pretty quickly, so. Just depends on how much you trust them.

Another thing is that when you jailbreak you do open up the whole file system of the phone. Vs just a small few locations if you don't. So that could pose as a risk, but as posted above the jailbreak community is pretty trustworthy and the bad ones are identified quickly.
