I have 2 new macs, (24 and 27), only 1 of which I use at a time.
It is sinking into my consciousness that ScreenRecycler is the best way to utilize both computers, and to use the 24 as the second monitor, via ScreenRecycler.

This is more apt, I think, than TelePort, which works dandy.
I make books and I have InDesign on the main computer; and the toolbars, Photoshop, Excel, at al, on the second monitor. I copy and paste a whole lot, and Teleport is not appropriate for that.

Any downsides to ScreenRecycler? All I need is that program and a cable?
Anything else? Any help appreciated.

WireFire cable

I think I need a 9-pin WireFire cable. That would hook up into the back of both computers. But I know nothing of cables and computer to computer communication.

1. So, if I hooked up a 9-pin WireFire cable to both computers, and downloaded ScreenRecyclyer, I could use my 24 mac as a second monitor to my 27 mac?

2. Do I need the Wirefire 9-pin cable?

3. Do I need one or two ScreenRecycler programs (buy one for each computer)?

ScreenRecycler uses the network. You'll need to network both machines. Do you have a router such as an Apple Airport Extreme that both machines use to connect to the internet? If so, that is sufficient.

And no, you only need one license of ScreenRecycler. Post more about how your computers are networked together (if at all) and how they both access the internet - that'll give us a better idea of your setup and what you'll need.

You can also download a trial to see if you like ScreenRecycler before you buy it.

About how my 2 macs are connected:

An ethernet (big-phone-cable looking thing) cable is hooked into the back of the 2010 27imac.

The 2009 24iMac gets its internet connection wirelessly from the 27.

Also, the 2 macs can share files wirelessly.

So, the 2 computers are connected wirelessly.

I'm in Korea, where the wireless is pretty fast, I hear.

I'm pretty sure my macs are connected by Airport.

If your two macs can do this, then you're all set. Just get yourself a trial copy of ScreenRecycler to see if you like it.

There are two components - JollyFastVNC will go on the 24" iMac and ScreenRecycler goes on the 27" iMac.

ScreenRecycler

Got it.

Many thanks.

I will now attempt to boldly go where other kind folk have gone before.

But first, is it easy to temporarily disable ScreenRecycler temporarily, to use the 24 mac for independent purposes? And easily to reconnect?

Absolutely. Whenever you want to use it, just run JollyFastVNC on the 24" iMac then start ScreenRecycler on the 27" iMac

You can also go into System Preferences -> Display to arrange the screens (if the 24" iMac is to left/right of 27" iMac)

ScreenRecycler

Got. One last newbie question.

I test and then buy ScreenRecycler and download it onto my new 27.

The other program goes on the 24.

How does the other program get from the 27 to the 24?

btw you can network 2 macs via firewire. or at least you used to be able to.

it might be faster than WLAN/Airport but i'm not sure. at a guess i think you'd see the following

Ethernet to Ethernet (must be 1G tho) - Fastest
Firewire
WLAN/Airport - slowest

If you're not running video on the 2nd screen (24" imac) i'd be inclined to stick with the slowest option

You could download it twice, once onto each machine. You also mentioned earlier that file sharing works between your macs.

ScreenRecycler installation

Help-uh.

I know that I am missing something simple here, but missing it I am.

I downloaded the ScreenRecycler and JollyFastVNC onto my main computer (A).

However, I could not open the JollyFastVNC on my secondary computer (B).

How do I get JollyFastVNC from A to B?
