Airplay in third party OS X apps

Are there any out there? OS X apps that can use airplay. Basically I want to be able to stream video from VLC or something to an appleTV like iTunes can, but after searching all I can find is iOS apps that can stream.
 
I don't think its possible yet as Apple have not made the API's available to third parties.
