Can't run sound to external monitor

This isn't about the 27" ACD sound issues I posted in the other thread.

The new monitor came in, and I hooked it up tonight. The sound is still coming out of my MBP though (closed in clamshell mode). When I open System Preferences and then Sound, there's no option to select the external monitor. It only says "internal speakers".

Any way to help me fix this? I want sound to play through the monitor.
 
Randomly started working almost three hours after I hooked it up. ??

Nevermind I guess.

So, so weird.
