iPhone 3g not jailbroken, non mc
planning to jailbreak it with redsn0w after upgrading

trying to upgrade to iOS4 because
1)looked at the flowchart and it's recommended
2)a lot of apps need it

Can someone explain HOW to do this, and the risks? My friend tried it and his broke...

and also, I want to have Nike Boom(an app), and it says it requires 4.1, but I'm not sure if its good to upgrade to 4.1

Thanks!

BTW THANKS for one of the sticky threads (the one with a flowchart), I would've been lost without it

Why do you want to upgrade to 4.0, then possibly 4.1?

From what I've read, 4.0 sucks on the 3g, but 4.1 is quite a bit better.

Obviously, I'd hit 4.1 straight instead of 4.0, but I don't know if 4.1 is fully hackable yet

so should I upgrade to 4.1?
AND PLEASE TELL ME HOW! and risks/how long it takes. THANKS!

What do you mean by fully hackable?

The link that I provided will tell you how to update/re-jailbreak.

It took me roughly an hour. Most of the time spent was waiting for the 4.1 firmware to download.

oh I'm sorry!
I didn't notice that the link had the 4.1 update part in it...my bad :)

one more questions though: Is it safe to upgrade to 4.1? I've heard stories that the phone freezes in the middle, dies out, etc.
and how long does the update take?

thank you SO MUCH!

4.1 has been just fine for me. I've noticed some lag, but it's not horrible.

Like I said above, it took me roughly an hour to update/jailbreak. Most of that time was spent waiting for the firmware to download.

about to update....just wondering btw, doesn't 4.2.1 slow down the 3g?

From my experience, updating from 4.1 to 4.2.1 (both official FW) made a significant difference. 4.0 and 4.1 were a terror on my 3G. I wanted to downgrade back to 3.1.3 but, I didn't have any backups in itunes under 3.1.3.

However I must say 4.2.1 feels way more smoother.

just did the whole process, worked perfectly, not too slow, and yes VERY smooth

thanks for everything guys

one question- when I installed an app from installous, I can't see it on the springboard...whats wrong? I rebooted and installed a free app from itunes store...
