I was hoping someone will be able to confirm for me what the i7 processor's name is when you check in About this Mac(more info)

What does it actually say?

Maybe you can take a look at http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/macbook_pro/index-macbookpro.html to see technical details. What exactly are you looking for?

Btw, what you want is located in System Profiler.

Thanks for the reply. I wanted to know exactly how OSx identifies the i7 processors i.e the name given to it because I was about to purchase a used product but realise that its actually the core2duo and not the i7

It will say "i7", as it does say Intel Core 2 Duo and PowerPC G4 or PowerPC G5 on other Macs.
