Just bought my first iPhone, the 32gb iPhone4.

Today I went to the casino,
played some poker and won 650$ :)

on the way home i was searching through craigslist on my Blackberry and found a like-new 32gb IPhone4 (box and everything) for a steal!!

The guy showed me the new Iphone4, it looked so very sexy , box and everything, not a single scratch to be found, everything seemed to work fine (except being locked to a different service provider and not having my own mini sim card yet), also the guy told me there is still almost a year of warranty on the still was definite plus.
So me, being a guy who likes shiny things, got absolutely blinded by the sleek sexy look of the iPhone4 and gave the money to the guy and he reset it and gave it to me.

Next thing I realized, what if I cant use it :S

I am a NEW IPhone user, welcome me to the group! yeahhhh lol :)
(please give me some TIPS, even something that should be obvious! For example I just found out about jailbreak which sounds absolutely AWESOME!! lol :p),

OK, well FIRST THING I wanted to do was UNLOCK the iPhone4.
After doing a bit of research, I found that the iPhone4 is only able to be unlocked with a OS version of 4.1 and older.

So common sense told me my first step should be to check the OS version on the iPhone4.

First problem I ran into was TURNING ON the iPhone4! LOL (I was trying to get to the SETTINGS screen on the phone, thinking the current OS version could be found there?)
I tried to turn on the iPhone4 (I dont have a mini sim card yet, not sure know if that has to do anything, also note the phone was RESET) however, all i get is a black screen with the apple logo in the middle with a loading circle which does not change.

Looking around a bit on the web, I learned that I needed to connect the phone to the computer to 'RESTORE' the iPhone4 through iTunes.
I pressed (and held) the home key and hold key (with USB connected) until the iTunes logo and USB cord picture came up on the iPhone screen.
At first my iTunes was unable to detect what the device connected was.
So i assumed, since iPhone4 is new and my iTunes was like 5 years old, I needed an update.
Surely enough, after the update iTunes finally ?somewhat? recognized my iPhone.

The iTunes with the iPhone device tab, shows me...
Name: iPhone
Capacity: n/a
Sofware version: n/a
Serial Number: n/a

and two buttons,
'check for update' (not clickable)
'Restore' (which i CAN click)

However I'm not sure if I press the 'Restore' button will upgrade the OS version on the iPhone4 (HOPEFULLY it hasn't already been done yet, fingers crossed!!) Not sure if I'm tripping out here, does it upgrade the OS? Better to be safe than sorry right? :p

If you have a friend with a micro or mini sim. Ask them to borrow it. All you have to do is put there sim into your iPhone and plug it into iTunes. Then just say activate a new phone and name it your phone. Then take there sim card an they can put it back into there phone without a problem.

Now once you have the phone on, you can go to settings general about and see which Version you are running. If you are under 4.1 you can unlock it.

Now jailbreakme.com only works with 4.01 and as far as I know I could not find how to jailbreak 4.02 so I used something called tiny umbrella which will upgrade your phone to 4.1 WITHOUT upgrading the baseband, meaning your phone will be on 4.1 but baseband is still 1.59.00 so you can use greenpois0n to jailbreak and then install ultrasn0w to unlock.

If you don't mind being on 4.02 then I would research a method on jailbreaking that but as far as I could remember I couldn't find a way but that was a while ago. Anyway if you have any questions just post it here.
Enjoy your new iPhone!

Second thing I needed help with was jailbreaking the iPhone 4.
No idea how.

please help me out! Also if i said anything that is wrong please let me know!
THanks!!!
(also I will be updating this thread as I progress through all the steps)

yeah definitely the first thing is getting the phone unlocked (up and running) so I can start using it lol (cant wait!!! gonna go out right now to buy me a mini sim :p) (the main problem for me is first unlocking)

But after i get my mini sim,
Im guessing I still need to 'RESTORE' through iTunes? (so if I want my phone unlocked I think I need to somehow go around this, correct? also how do i go about this -.- lol)

Thanks again

Also just learned about the UNLIMITED DATA trick which would be a definite must get :p sooooo coooooollll XP

(also I will be updating this thread as I progress through all the steps)

Restore button will upgrade the OS to the Latest released by Apple since your phone has not been Syncing with your iTunes.

I had a similar issue with my sons iPhone 4 which was setup to sync with the family Mini, then he decided to buy his own MBP, so we had to Restore the phone and after we did this, it loaded the iOS from his original 4.0.1 to 4.1 and he had to Sync everything all over again.

This was not a big deal but I think you need to get a Micro Sim and Activate your phone before you think of JB'ing.

I would make sure you have a good sync with your iTunes library, and that the About iPhone states what capacity and version it is before trying anything else.

ok i will first try to get the mini sim card.
also while i was sleeping i was thinking, what if I find out that the OS version on the phone is the most current? am i screwed? or could i use warranty or something lol

I think Apple has a 2 week return policy. I take it that you are not with AT&T?

Edit: Oops just read the part about you purchasing off Craigslist.

You don't say where you are, but what I would suggest you do is get the phone up and running first and then worry about jailbreaking, etc. If you truly do have an unlocked iPhone, then you are not tied to a specific carrier, but if you are in the US, the only authorized carrier is AT&T, and iPhones in the States are locked to that carrier.
Even if you ultimately wind up with the latest version of the IOS software (4.2.1), there are likely to be untethered jailbreak options available for that version very soon. But I would get the phone working before I started to worry about the added options that will be available to you.

I am a Canadian user and like the states, various service providers locked their phones to their own provider.
In my case I am a 'Rogers' user, and the phone is locked to 'Fido'

Consider my pocket Ace's crushing your pocket Kings, for an 800 dollar pot and sell the iphone to me for 200 bucks. Seriously, I'm on ATT for awhile and I need a new iphone as my 3g is getting extremely long in the tooth. If you're interested, let me know...

Thanks! very very helpful! :)
just a question tho,
does it have to be a sim card from the service provider it is locked to? or any sim card will do?

the one its locked to.

thanks for the help.
i have just purchased a new micro sim card from the service provider my phone is currently locked to. (and yes it probably would cost me the same as paying a local unlocking guy but i would like to try it by myself ^^)
I popped in the sim card and connected it to my computer and itunes.
i still only get the same buttons list ...

1) 'check for update' (not click-able)
2) 'restore' (which i can click)

when i click the 'restore' button, this message comes up...
'Are you sure you want to restore the iPhone "iPhone" to its factory settings? All of your media and other data will be erased, and the newest version of the iPhone software will be installed."

Does this mean the OS on the iPhone will be upgraded to a version more recent than 4.1 and therefore will be unable to unlock?
If so, how will i avoid this upgrade?

Save SHSH blobs with tinyumbrella
Restore using a 4.1 .ipsw file that you will download
restore using the 4.1 firmware you just downloaded the TSS server function of tinyumbrella

Google how restore shsh blobs you'll find many guides.

thanks for the tip.
i found a guide on how to do it,
seemed rather very simple.

first i downloaded tinyumbrella 4.21.01 (latest)
i closed iTunes and opened tiny umbrella
i pressed the 'START TTS SERVER' button (did not recieve any errors) so i proceeded to the next step
i turned on iTunes and pressed 'RESTORE' and continued the upgrade so far.
hopefully im doing everything right! ^^

No its not the simcard.

Okay, when you clicked restore. did it download firmware 4.2.1? Or are you trying to restore to 4.1?

You should put the iphone in DFU Mode.

i dont understand what im doing wrong.

what i did...
1)plugin iphone to comp, hold home key and power till iTunes and usb came up
2)turned off itunes
3)turn on tinyumbrella(4.21.01), start tts server
4)turn on itunes, and press 'RESTORE'
5)ends up with ERROR 1604

but i have no idea when that comes in lol
I WANNA AT LEAST TURN ON MY PHONE SO BADDDD T.T FRUSTRATING LOL

are there no solutions to this..? i been lookin up on web for HOURS but alot of solutions which seemed outdated, and there are so many solutions...
so far ive tried,,,,
-removing and reinstalling most recent version of iTunes
-removing and reinstalling USB
-try everything in DFU mode
-try everyting in normal (iTunes, arrow, usb on iPhone screen)

any tips..? i bought this iphone from craigslist (was working fine and he reset the phone and since then i couldnt get it started) and he told me there is a 1-year warranty on it still valid (is this true?) and locked to Fido (i use Rogers service provider). Can/should i go to apple and ask for a new one (how should i ask? are there certain things i should/shoudnt say?)?

T.T

First things first, shine a flashlight into the headphone jack. If it is solid white, then you're ok, if it's pink then it's water damaged and that could be causing your problems.

If you used tinyumbrella, you need to edit your hosts file, there's guides for this online, remove any lines with "gs.apple.com".

If your iPhone has already been updated to 4.2.1, you cannot downgrade. I usually check using redsn0w under the "install cydia" option. When the scrolling text on your phone comes up it will do volume checks, and the os version will be marked in the volume Jasper*****-N90OS (The stars are your build number 8C148 is 4.2.1)

Try restoring with a mac, or another computer.

You can't downgrade to 4.1 as apple is not signing that version anymore.. Forget tiny umbrella and all. Make sure your iphone is even legit&works.

Upgrade and install 4.2.1 there will be a jailbreak for it before xmas (comex posted that) and im sure there will also be a unlock shortly after.
