Mac Pro Memory Slots

I noticed on the Apple refurb site that Mac Pros from 2010 have either 4 or 8 memory slots. Is there an easy way to tell how many memory slots a computer will have? From what I have seen it looks like the quad core machines will have 4 slots while the eight core machines have eight slots. How many memory slots are in the hex core machines?

Also, the first Mac Pros had eight slots. When did they go to the two different configurations?

Thanks for the help. Number of processors X 4 = number of memory slots is easy to remember. If it started in 2009 this formula would apply to the Westmere and Nehalem processor based machines?
 
Easiest way to remember: 4x DIMM slots per CPU (takes into account of the additional pair of cores that were added to some of the Westmere based parts). ;)

Since the Quads and Hex systems are Single Processor systems (SP, though sometimes UP for Uni-Processor is used), they have 4x DIMM slots.

The Octad and Dodecas are Dual Processor systems (DP for short), so they have 8x DIMM slots.
