Using a bluetooth dongle instead of internal bluetooth

If I attach a usb bluetooth dongle to my Mac Pro and attempt to pair my mouse and trackpad with it how can I tell it's actually paired with the dongle and not the machine's own bluetooth? Is there something in the bluetooth system preferences? In the system profiler? Some other tool?
