Just found this-

http://mb.softbank.jp/mb/ipad/price_plan/everybody/

Basically they're offering a mobile phone style contract for the iPad, which includes getting the iPad FOR FREE.

Of course you have to sign up for a 25 month contract.

16GB, 32GB, 64GB iPads for 4,725円, 5,125円, 5,515円 per month respectively.

This is only for the 3G version, since it's being done by the cellular company.

Promotion runs from 12/3/2010 to 2/28/2011

Kinda wish they had it here!

EDIT
oh, just found an English page for it! http://mb.softbank.jp/mb/ipad_en/price_plan/everybody/

It's a good deal. Free iPad and unlimited data for the price where US peons only get 2 gb and have to shell out 500 bucks for an entry level iPad.

...and it's still a LOT cheaper in the US than it is in Canada.... The wireless plans here are rather expensive... We keep hoping that Sprint and Verizon come into Canada to get us some competitive prices. But our lovely CRTC (our version of the FCC) has absolutely no interest in helping the consumer, but rather making sure that the prices remain high.. Sux.

Yeah but their prepaid is much worse than here.

4410 yen for 1GB
1510 yen for 100MB

That's basically twice as expensive. =(

It seems like they're "pushing" people towards a contract. It ends up being like 2700 yen per month for data instead of 4410 if you did it monthly. Much better rates!
