Yeah, some prof. at a college did a survey of the top 100 apps and found that you could basically figure out someone's entire life if you had access to the data from all 100 apps if they were installed on a phone.

It's really scary, but you can protect yourself by only installing programs that don't make use of your unique phone ID, recent phone numbers, address book, etc.

Yeah, it is. Do you want advertisers and other companies to know exactly where you are 24/7, your age, your gender, your address, etc? You're under 24 hour surveillance without a warrant.

I will discontinue using some of the apps listed in this article.

But they are collecting that information. They can discover your fetish. And if they choose they can publish or sell that info to whomever they wish without your knowledge or permission.

information has not been private in a long time. Most companies if their willing to pay for it, can get every bit of information about you. The only time your information is actually secure, if you are police, FBI, or CIA. Most people forget that they are nobody and their information means nothing unless it is some scammer with your credit number.

^^ This! Every click of your mouse gives advertisers (and others) a window into who you are, what you are interested in, what you buy. Short of using clay tablets stored in dark caves, that's just how it is these days... NOT saying it's right, but it IS part of the landscape.

Very interesting read (and study).

I always check the permissions of applications on Android before installing them. It might be useful to people if there was a similar system when it comes to iOS applications so you have more chance of telling what you were sharing.

This article covers how these "permissions" don't comply with what the apps harvest and submit though.

So either way, you're just as vulnerable.

Sorry ... I have no reason to be paranoid, I said that I found it interesting Apple was sharing so much info, as for Google, I expect that from them. :cool:

I wasn't saying Android is perfect but the only example I can test from the article is Paper toss which does seem to have legit access to the phone's identity via the "Phone Calls: read phone state and identity" permission on installation.


As for Pandora radio which sends "age, gender, location and phone identifiers" it has the following permissions upon installation:
Your personal information
read contact data, write calendar data
Network communication
full Internet access, view network state, view Wi-Fi state, create Bluetooth connections
Phone calls
read phone state and identity, read phone state and identity
System tools
modify global system settings, prevent phone from sleeping, bluetooth administration, change Wi-Fi state, change network connectivity
Extra
android.permission.ADD_SYSTEM_SERVICE

The only one I can't see is any mention of location but as I can't install Pandora (I'm in the UK) I can't see if the appbrain page is accurate or not.

Either way, there is bound to be thousands of Android and iOS users unknowingly sending information that they may not want to.

If you think that only advertisers are the only one that uses this data, you are a chief member of the village idiot tribe.

I'll give you a quick example of only ONE link.
You put app on iphone, app takes all of your data included who you are, gps, etc. Sends it back to ad server. Ad company takes said info (live info) and sells it to who??? Yes, anyone with cash. Or said company is given a visit by your friendly gov't agency and merely "asks" for access to this live data. And of course, we already know by now that companies will bend over willingly to give up your data to the govt.
Doubt me? Read what Visa and other credit card companies were doing recently. Giving up all your CC info (what purchase, where, how much, etc.) to the FBI, freely, no warrant, all because they asked.
Read about what Bank of America is giving to the gov't.

So no sir, its not just ad companies that's using your live data.
 
oh god not this again people need to stop think that the world gives a ***** about you. They don't the only reason for getting your info is for advertisements. hell I could get 90% of your information by getting info off your flip phone. or I could just hack this site, get your email and go from there.

If you want to escape people from getting your info, kill yourself because even if you travel to some third world country and live in some tribe that has never heard of technology, I can simply walk over to the hut next to you and get all of your info.
 
I am disgusted by this.

Not because advertisers know what to retail to me, but because although they know what i like they still continue to give me the same advertisements of things I hate and will never by rather then filling my pages up with content of things i love...

just kidding, its pretty ugly whats going on, nobody should know that much about another person, I feel it makes us all too generic and numbers. :apple:

while agree with you, companies having been finding ways to get this info that's how they get their demographic info
