macbook takes forever to shut down

I was going to delete a file and it said 'preparing to move to trash'
but never actually deleted it.
I tried shutting down the mac, but it wouldn't because it was
still moving this file to the trash.
Then i forced it to shut down. It is taking a really long time,
30 minutes so far.
Why does it take so long to shut down, and how do I delete the stubborn file?
