iMac (intel) died

My 20" intel-based iMac has gone dead, stuck on a gray screen and not responding to anything. (I got it late 2006). I took it in, and the genius bar confirmed the HD is dead, but it also does not respond to CD boot. Is it worth trying to put in a new HD? If it does not respond to CD boot, does that mean the issue is more widespread?
