First things to do with a new Mac?

Just bought my first ever macbook pro this week.

What are some of the things I should do to it?

Shoot i just read instructions on how to calibrate the battery. It said to do it first. I already have been using it for 4 days. Is it too late to calibrate?
 
ok thanks...I started with calabrating the battery. Seems like it will take 2 days to do. Sucks I have to have the computer off for 5 hours but oh well. Man they suggest doing that once a month if you're always plugged in. How annoying!

It doesn't take 2 days. Just leave the computer running on battery while you do whatever you usually do. It's not a problem, really. Just time it to have it shut down before you go to sleep. When you wake up (assuming you sleep 5+ hours), you're ready to go!

Yep, but it is worth it if you like your battery. For me it really doesn't become an inconvenience because I tend to run my battery down prior to plugging it. About once a month I go ahead and let it run down and calibrate it. :D

But seriously, look into some open source programs for the things you need. I will recommend handbrake, perian, flip 4 mac, StuffIt expander and open office.
 
I would install the following:

The Unarchiver - decompression utility for almost all compressed formats
TrashMe - application uninstaller
Perian - codec pack for DivX, Xvid, MKV, and more
Flip4Mac - codec for WMA/WMV
XiphQT - codec for Ogg Theora/Vorbis
Growl - unified notification system

You also might want to check these out:

Burn - media burning utility
NeoOffice - free office suite compatible with MS Office
Jumpcut - clipboard utility
Caffeine - system sleep prevention utility
Adium - instant messenger client with support for multiple services
Seashore - basic image editor

Check out the Safari Extensions. Turn ON the Firewall for peace of mind.

Mozilla Firefox maybe? I do love Safari, but i think i just got used to Firefox. Both are very great browsers, Safari is able to share bookmarks with other devices via MobileMe, which should be a plus if you use that solution.
 
I generally prefer Firefox but it seems slow to me now... Switched to Google chrome for now..
