Restoring from older Phone

A friend of mine backed up his older iPhone and would now like to restore his contacts to his iPhone 4. Any suggestions on how to restore just the contacts from a previous backup? When I click on restore it wants to restore his iPhone 4 to factory settings, which isn't what we want to do.

Any help will be appreciated!!

It should ask you whether or not you want to restore "As new" or "From a backup" and you should choose from a backup and select whatever backup you would like to restore from.

If he has his contacts saved/synced with address book or any other program on his computer he can sync them back.
If he restores from backup he will get everything, not just the contacts. And IMO its not a good idea to restore from previous models backups to the new phone cause people experience slowdowns and bugs.
