Set-Up Apple Mail like iPhone

I really like that my iPhone only syncs the last 100 messages with all three of my email accounts. That way I don't have a lot of memory being used. I also like that I can "search the server" if necessary.

Is there any way to do the same with apple mail on my mac?

Right now if I add my gmail account it downloads all 22000 messages.
