American iPad in London

I received a 3G iPad for Christmas. It is the American version but I live in the UK. I've been assured it will work without any problem and that I can pick up the appropriate SIM card when I get back to the UK. However, my question is this: If I boot it up and sync with my laptop, etc while still in the US will I encounter any problems? Will I then be able to insert SIM, etc without having to wipe and and begin again? Many thanks.
