Have had a 3GS and an ipad. Got a (used) iphone4. My music playlist is 9GB.
First odd item is that (both running 4.1) the 3GS storage capacity is listed as 14.3GB while this iphone4 lists capacity @ 14.01? Is that normal? I tried activating the iphone4 first using the itunes backup from the 3GS and then after a full wipe activating it as a new phone. Both times were identical @ 14.01 capacity.

Second even more odd thing: the 9GB playlist I mentioned. That is its size in itunes and on the 3GS. When I loaded it to my ipad (running 4.2.1) it took 9.1GB... no big deal. But when I synced with the iphone4 it suddenly swelled to 9.6GB???

Anyone have any idea what is going on and how to get back that nearly a GB (well, .9GB) between the 3GS and the iphone4???

The iPhone 4 will have less usable space then the 3Gs because it's firmware partition is larger. Just as a 16Gb 2G will have the most room, then the 16Gb 3G, then the 16Gb 3Gs, the the 16Gb 4.

Each new feature of the phone requires more space for the OS and Firmware. So you loose a little more space with each new version of iOS, and for each new feature added to the phone.

Yes - that makes sense... thanks.

What (for me) still doesn't make sense is why a specific music playlist that is 9GB in itunes & on a 3GS is taking 9.6GB or 600MB more space on the iphone4?
