Quick question...Which firmware is jailbreakable on iPhone 4? Tethered? Untethered?

Redsn0w is currently in beta. It works untethered but there are still some bugs to be worked out such as BT not working and Skype crashing. You also need an SHSH blob from 4.2b3 either locally or saved on the Cydia servers.

I'd expect the final version to be out soon.

Okay. I might wait then before buying. An iPhone 4 w/o being jailbroken is not an iPhone 4.

I've always wondered why the 'dev' crowd latches onto a beta (in this case 4.2b3) to do all their development against. Seems counter-productive.

If you don't own an iPhone 4 now, then it's not possible for you to have an SHSH blob for 4.2b3. The current untethered solution will not work for you. Other teams are working on alternative methods.
