My First Mac

I was finally able to get my hands on a Mac. I have been wanting one for a long time but I have a PC laptop that I've been waiting for to die. Well the PC is still alive but my GF's dad gave me his old G5 for FREE, with the 20in cinema dispaly! yes i know its old and outdated but its still a Mac.

Here are some specs on my free G5
Processor - Dual 2 ghz
Memory - 1.5 GB DDR SDRAM
Graphics Card - ATI Raedon 9600 Pro 64mb
Hard drive - 150GB

I need an airport express card for wifi still but those are cheap
is there any other cheap mods i could do to make this thing a little faster?

What is a PCI card? and what is firewire used for? sorry for all the noob questions

Oh... Not sure of your model but you might need to also get an Antenna also.

I picked my G5 (7,3) not to long ago had to get an Airport card and Antenna.

This was one of the models that often suffered from logic board failure. The good news is that if it made it this long, it was clearly one of the good ones :). No one has developed anything for the G5 in a bit, so they can't necessarily run the newest software. The last OS that worked on them was Leopard. They can still be very capable machines.
 
yea all of the cheap ones are for PC's

what a bummer... I've never really tried to mod a computer before so this is all pretty new to me, but since i got this one for free i thought it would be a good one to start with. plus i wanna get a MacPro somewhat soon hopefully by summer.
 
There are still some new web browsers made/optimized for PowerPc:)


TenFourFox is firefox 8 for PPC and updated when FireFox is. it has optimized versions for your G5 (G3&G4 As Well) this is my default web browser and is super fast!! Link for Tenfourfox For G5: http://tenfourfox.googlecode.com/files/TenFourFoxG5-8.0.app.zip

Camino has optimized Versions for G5 as well. i just don't know how much longer they will support PowerPc. But overall it is a good webBrowser as well! i just like Tenfourfox better but that is just me:D. Link for Camino For G5: http://www.filefactory.com/file/cf1868c/n/Camino2_1-G5-970_dmg

Safari 5.0.6 For leopard it is not updated any more and has some bugs. But it works if you like to use safari :) Link for safari 5.0.6 http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1422 or use software update:)
 
I have a 6800 Ultra in my G5 and I never hear it but then again the only game I play is D2 so not really heavy graphic.
