I want to run repair disk on my mac. . But I don't want to accidentally erase my HD and reinstall the OS!

Can I get to "Disk Utility" by holding the "option" key during start up... and select the OSX DVD on the grey screen. Will it automatically reinstall my OS from the DVD or will it allow me to repair the disk?

Is that the same as booting from DVD by holding "C"?

Thanks!

I can't boot from DVD by holding "C" for some reason but I can from holding "option".

Will I be brought to the Disk utility option by this method of booting from DVD? Or will it automatically begin installing the OSX from the DVD?

What OS version are you using? Using 10.6 and below you should be able to use the disk utility option once you boot from the installer DVD.

Here's an article about 10.4 disk utility: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2055
