I think by having a password to access my MacBook it slows down time that the computer actually boots. My friend that has a MacBook and no user I'd and password seems to get to the actual os faster.
 
Not really, you might just have more things loaded on startup.

Plus, it takes a while for the login window to come up, the user to enter the password, and then the system to process and login.

How do I know what I can remove on start up? I just bought lap top. I think I'm fine with app loading on it

Well, you should be fine as long as you don't have anything like Skype or Steam opening at login. That just takes a lot more time considering the hard drive is already busy loading the OS.
 
the only thing that I think slows it down that significantly is having FileVault enabled, and even that doesn't slow it down that much.
