All over the place
I wonder if the power consumption of a 3G GSM connection and a 2G GSM connection are different when the phone is in standby mode (i.e. no talking).

Any GSM (or other) experts who could give reliable answer?

Thank you.

If the phone reverts to 2G because it can't get a 3G signal, then yes, as the radio is trying to get a 3G signal and operating at full power.

If 3G is turned off, then 2G uses less power.

So, if you are in a low-signal area, turn off 3G (if you can).

Thanks for this!

Just to clarify, assuming that both 2G and 3G signals are at maximum strength, would the phone in STANDBY mode consume more power just for staying in the 3G spectrum or not?
