Imac - buy or an interim measure

Hi Guys

I am new to the forum. My PC needs replacing almost immediately, and would like to switch to an iMac.

Have read the threads regarding the iMac replacement due around March 2012.

If I cannot wait, what's the best spec to go for to be as future proofed as possible & not have to change for a a few years. Money not a big issue.

I'd always recommend buying a mac with the highest 'no upgradeable' spec you can get. Forget huge HDs and RAM, you can buy that anywhere at a big discount. You can't replace the CPU or GPU, so get the best you can afford.

In terms of longevity, a quad core has to be the best choice.

That spec looks good. How about a 256gb sad drive in addition to the ITb & a 2gb graphics card. I can add ram much cheaper later to 16mb.

well the refurbished gives you no add-ons . Sometimes you get lucky and get more machine then you paid for. IE better ram better hdd better GPU. that is a cr@p shoot but it happens. I tell all iMac user to really think hard about buying the internal ssd. This thread is my link on the lacie external

Too complex for me :confused: but thanks.

If i buy a new machine I get the chance to buy an SSD - is it not worth the bother?

Ram, we are agreed on
better hdd - how do you spec that? All western digital it seems. is 2tb more reliable han 1tb.
Graphics - i can get 2mb if I order a new iMac.
 
when you buy a refurbished and the spec is 1tb hdd sometimes they send you one with a 2tb hdd.

when you buy a refurbished sometimes they send the 2gb gpu even though you paid for the 1gb gpu.

and when you buy a refurbished with 4gb ram sometimes you get more 8gb or 16gb ram.

the warranty is the same 1 year with an option to buy applecare.


the main difference in buying the refurbished is you can't get a certain 2gb gpu.

if you really need the 2gb gpu buy a new machine directly from apple.
