I got the message that my hard drive was getting close to being full, which shocked me, 1TB is a lot of space. I went digging through my music/movies files. What i've done in the past is downloaded music, moved from download file to music file, then added in with iTunes. well now i found under the directory Music/iTunes/iTunes Music/ with more music there. and with in the iTunes/iTunes Music/Music with what seems to be my entire library.

Where should i start removing the files from. And which directory does iTunes use for the music.

If you have the following checked in iTunes > Preferences, iTunes will make a copy of every song you add to the library, duplicating your files. Either leave the bottom checkbox checked and delete the original files, or uncheck it so iTunes won't make copies.
iTunes > Preferences > Advanced > organize & copy checkboxes.PNG
