Sorry for asking what is probably a stupid question, but someone is literally giving me a free iPhone 3GS tomorrow, and while I'm not fussy and am grateful, I am wondering if it can be updated to the iOS 5?

It can actually run it quite well. In my experience, at least with my 32GB 3Gs it's nearly as good as my 4;-) not quite as snappy. Definitely snappier than 3Gs on 4.3.x, but that's just my opinion.

I'm sure i read somewhere that the 3GS won't run certain parts of the ios5 !

It'll do everything that doesn't require hardware that it doesn't have. Example, it won't do FaceTime or play gyroscope games. But everything else in iOS 5, it'll do.

Yeah I thought it was only minor parts of the iOS software it wouldn't support.
Some says it lags the 3GS but I can't confirm that as my model is the 4.

My 3Gs has no lag on 5.0.1 and is just as responsive as my iPod Touch 4G, but not as fast as my 4S. I've actually yet to find something that my iPT 4G has that my 3Gs doesn't, in terms of software enhancements.

such as Siri

That's currently a 4S exclusive feature and not part of the standard iOS 5 feature set.

It's great on iOS 5 silky smooth & quick.

It is very smooth in the begining, but as long as you keep a lot of apps in the background, it becomes very laggy, probably because of the 256M ram, but once I stopped all the background app, it becomes snappy again.
