AT&T 4G LTE in San Diego

So i read the iPhone 4s will have LTE. Will it switch over automatically and how can I tell it is running LTE?

The 4s doesn't have LTE.

Read wrong. It does not have 4G LTE. It has 3G and will switch to EDGE automatically on AT&T's network when needed.

Ah ok but it is listed on AT&T's site as a 4g phone.

AT&T treats both HSPA+ and LTE devices as 4G devices.
The 4S is an HSPA+ device.

I haven't seen HSPA+ speeds in San Diego when running speed tests on my phone in and around town.

Yup. AT&T advertises HSPA+ devices as "4G" but devices that are actually capable of 4G are labeled as "4G LTE". Confusing marketing.

That's what AT&T called HSPA+ before T-Mobile stated the whole faux 4G ad campaigns.
I have a Nokia N75 that is an HSPA+ phone and it shows a 3G+ icon when using an HSPA+ signal.
My Atrix just shows an H+ when using HSPA+.
My Samsung Focus has a 3G+ indicator as well.
