From time to time (for instance, a few times last night at around 2am and now at around 11pm) my Time Capsule starts making the whirring noise it usually makes when backing but then the whirring stops and no back up is made (not that one is due). And this happens a few times in a row at 2 minute intervals.

No problems are being reported in Airport Utility. I have restarted then hard reset the thing but no change.

Any ideas? Is this usual?

Is your network secured? It might be an intrusion by a third party. Make sure you've turned on firewalls, password-protected your wifi and so on.

It's password protected. But no firewalls.

I'm starting to think it's my Mac mini that's doing something to the Time Capsule. Usually both my MacBook and Mac mini are on when the whirring noise starts. But today and last night, the Mac mini has been off (with the MacBook on) and there has been no whirring.

I think I'll take the Mac mini and Time Capsule to the Genius Bar.
