What 750GB Hard Drives @ 7,200 Speed Are Apple Using In MBPs?

I put a Seagate Momentus in mine but it failed within a year - 2 out of 2 dodgy seagates so I won't be using them again. What are apple putting in the latest MBP?

I think I might get the WD Scorpio Black 750GB 7200rpm
or Toshiba 1TB 5200rpm - will 12.5mm fit a MBP?

I just installed a Hitachi 7200 RPM 750 GB HDD, and so far, so good. I've always had good luck with Hitachi in the past (and it replaced the OEM Hitachi 7200 RPM 500 GB HDD).

I don't believe 12.5mm will work in the MBP.
 
Are apple still using hitachi? My drive from them is still going nicely from 2008.

Could get a 1TB Samsung Spinpoint @ 5400
or WD Scorpio Black 750GB @ 7200 (WD seem to like me)
or your Hitachi
 
I think they are either Hitachi's (which is really good) or Samsung's (also good but heard more complaints than the Hitachi's)

Weird about the Seagate drives. They are pretty solid too. You must've got t2o bad ones.

Go with Hitachi
 
I just bought a macbook with 750gb 7200rpm late 2011 15inch and it has a hitachi drive and no name RAM.
 
Dunno whether go to with the Hitachi or WD 7200 750GB - Any opinions?
Super Quiet & Reliable is what I'm after...not that anyone would want a noisy one that breaks.

My late 2011 15" MBP came with a 7200rpm 750GB Hitachi.

WD has gone way down hill recently. Go with Hitachi.

Is it quiet and vibration free? The 7200 speed Hitachi one that came with my late 2008 MBP is actually pretty noisy
 
The two Hitachi drives I've had experience with have been extremely noisy. Both are the 320GB drives that came with the 15" MBP from 2010 and the 13" MBP from 2011.

The one in the 15" MBP has since died, and the one in the 13" is heading down the same path I fear (slow, noisy etc).

I'd say go for a WD Scorpio Black drive, I've heard great things about them.

But really, just steer clear of Hitachi.

The only two drives I've never had fail are Hitachi and Samsung. And the Hitachi drives have consistently the quietest and most vibration-free. I've tried a number of 7200 RPM drives in my 13" MBP and the only one I can use is the Hitachi. The WD and Seagates are loud and vibration-prone in comparison.

i have 20 2tb WD Caviar Black & 24 2tb WD RE4's since 2009 and they have been rock solid in terms of reliability.
I've had a lot of problems with Seagate Baracuds drives in the past which resulted in me buying WD drives.

Consider yourself lucky. I've had the pleasure of testing over 1,000+ HDD's recently for various storage projects. There were over 30+ WD failures.

None of our Hitachi drives have failed.

It could be that the 320GB Hitachi drives that I had, came from a bad batch. Nevertheless, I've sworn off Hitachi for good.

WELL THANKS ALOT .my 1tb western digital drive is starting to click!!! and it has all my data on it!

Entirely understandable given what happened to you!

I think you hit on the real problem - every manufacturer is going to have SOME issues. I've read that Hitachi engineers their drives more conservatively than others, making them less prone to fail and less prone to bad batches. Whether that's true or not I could not say - I would like to believe it.
 
I just bought the Hitachi Travelstar 750GB SATA II 2.5" Mobile Drive from Tiger Direct's ebay store for $120 + shipping. I'm planning to install in my 2010 15" 2.4 Ghz i5 MacBook Pro.

they use whatever is the cheapest they can get, which usually is the hitachi "deathstar" HDDs, which are known for a really high failure rate. NO, a 12.5mm HDD will not fit. Go with a 7200RPM drive, you will notice the difference from a 5400 to a 7200 drive.

As a note, the entire Hitachi Deskstar line has about a 45% failure rate, where as most other mfgs have about a 15% failure rate.
