Macbook + Phillips Screen..

Should be fine, unless the wire is naff.

I bought a cheap mini display port to HDMI and it stopped working after a couple of weeks.

Also it seems that the monitor doesn't have speakers, I'm not sure how to output the display through the HDMI and audio through the headphone port.

Yeah it should work it says it has a HDMI port. I have the same adaptor to connect my mac to my tv and my monitor.

If you go to system preferences -> sound you can choose your sound output.
 
let us know, because i am going to buy a cord like that as well. i guess its hit or miss unless you actually buy the adapter to hdmi from apple.

Think the cable was around 18 quid from Amazon, hopefully be ok.
