boxes across screen and two logins

I have a 15" macbook pro. When I leave the lid up and walk away for a while sometimes when I come back the screen is gray. When I move the mouse these small boxes pop up under the cursor that is the 'real' screen. Then I login and it flips screens and then asks me to login again. I am using Mac OSX 10.7.2 Lion. Any pointers would be appreciated?
