If you're not on thie 4GB (or new 5GB) tethering plan, and AT&T detects tethering, you will get a warning, and they will switch you to the current tethering plan.
My neighbor lost his cable service and tethered his iPhone and got a warning by the next day. He continued and a week later he checked his account after receiving another email and they had moved him to a a tethered plan.
Worst is that he had already exceeded the tethered plan and was paying extra charges. AT&T means business.
