At what point does AT&T throttle speed

I have the unlimited plan and have never crossed the 2gb point until today. I am at 2gb right now... Though first rep I spoke with said my average usage is 10gb a month. Too bad she couldn't do the calculation;). Anyway, I spoke with a data specialist who said they are currently throttling around 5 gb. Is this true? I'd like to avoid throttling if possible. I'm assuming that since the plans change tomorrow that using up to 3 gb will be acceptable?

I think it is unreasonable for them to expect me to know what their cap is when they don't even know what it is.
 
You will get throttled when you cross the 2GB line, but you have to be in the top 5% of offenders. So if you don't want to get throttled then either try to use WiFi more often (if possible) or just cross your fingers every month and hope you don't become the top 5%.
 
I've gone 8.2GB and 7.6GB in the past two months respectively without getting any throttling. 6+GB each month before except a few where my usage was like 1GB to 4GB.

Quite frankly.. I'm not sure if there really is a method to their madness. It seems almost random to an extent. Without them giving an official notice, it's mostly all heresy, which never helps the consumer in the end :(
 
I've been thinking that it seems to be in highly congested areas. This would explain why many people can go past 2GB and not get throttled. Either this or AT&Ts system is just picking picking people at random and throttling them.
 
The rep said its done by market.... I'm in California so that's my market. Seems like too big of an area to lump together as one area. There are lots of populated and less populated areas.

I am in buffalo. I use between 2-3 GBs each month, with a high of just over 4. Never been throttled.
 
For the past 2 months ATT has sent a message saying I'm using to much data, I've looked at my usage and its been about 2.9GB when they send it. In the past i have used 11GB,5GB,7GB and never relieved a message, i guess it catches up with you?
 
And what's your up/downlink speed after being throttled? 1 Mbps? Less?

I'm curious with AT&T & Verizon throttle policy as I'm not based in US.

In my country, our carriers provide no fast AND unlimited broadband internet. It's either decent 3 - 7Mbps volume based connection (pay expensive for excess data usage), or measly 512kbps but unlimited connection. Choose your poison? :D
