I got a new MBP for Christmas, and need office for it. Is it worth it to pay the premium for 2011 when I can get 2008 for $60 less?
Excel 2011 is leaps and bounds better than 2008 though. The ability to use the Visual Basic Editor is huge IF you are a big Excel user which is why I upgraded.
Thanks for the replies guys, exactly the kind of info I was looking for. I think I'm going to go for the '11 because xcel is a pretty crucial part of my job and my goal is to be able to use my macbook as a replacement for my work laptop
Agreed ... and you can minimize the ribbon to give it more of a 2008 look.
People need to get over UI changes. I hover between indifference to preferring the 2011 setup.
I think your question should have a third choice: something else like iWork or OpenOffice.
I got Office 2011 for my wife through my company's home use program. I only paid 10 bucks and I still felt like I got ripped off. It took over her poor little Mac mini. There were 3 new icons in the dock and everything just got S L O W. Every time she tried to open a file that should have been associated with OpenOffice, MS Office would launch. MS Office installation corrupted fonts OpenOffice needed and I had to reinstall OpenOffice to get it working again.
.
The ribbon in 2011 can be completely turned off in Preferences, unlike the awful Office 2008 "Elements Gallery," which is always visible, even when collapsed.I prefer 2008 because I prefer not to have the ribbon toolbar.
On my PC with Word 2003, I can select an entire web page, including text and graphics, copy it, and paste it into a Word document. On My MacBook Pro with Word 2008, I select an entire web page, including text and graphics, hit "copy" and try to paste it into a Word document. All I get is TEXT, no graphics.
I had asked earlier about resolving this problem with 2008. The suggestion that I could drag the images to my desktop and then drag that to Word to get images in didn't work. I could select the web page, but it wouldn't drag over to the desktop. So I gave up and just turned on my PC when I wanted to paste a web page into Word.
But I'd prefer to use my Mac. Will the new Word 2011 allow me to cut and paste graphics from web page to Word document? or cut and paste from other sources? I also tried cutting and pasting from iPhoto to Word 2008, and that didn't work either. Will it work with iPhoto and Word 2011? Thanks.
I ended up getting 2011 home and business in a partial trade and love it. I really like the full screen option in word with no distracting menus around the page.
