I'm basically looking for clarification over whether using a 3.5mm extension cable from a monitor/MBA for my headphones to plug into will lower the audio quality in any way. I'm not an audiophile by any means, but I do have a decent pair of headphones now - so I'm curious.

From some reviews it seems that they do affect audio quality significantly in some cases. Is it a case of you get what you pay for?

I suppose if you bought a really poor cable and/or if you bought a reallly long cable maybe. However, if you are just looking for something like a 6' extension you really shouldn't have much of a signal degradation (unless you were to cross a power cable or something that would add interference). I've used many from monoprice with no loss in quality that I can tell.
