how to change appearance of Mac HD to folders from list

Every time I open a flash drive it opens in a folder view. Everything does that. ONLY thing that doesn't is when I open up my Mac HD. I get it in List format. How do I change it so that too opens in folder view. It has always opened in folder view until I updated to the new OSX. Thx.

should just be able to change it one time. go to finder, view, show view options (cmd J) then choose always open option in the format you set it in. is that what you are talking about?
