Hi all,

I have an Apple Cinema Display and a 13" MBP running the latest version of Lion. Something I find annoying is that whenever I use my MBP in clamshell mode and need to disconnect the display, all the windows are spread all over on my MBP and sometimes I can't even reach it. Is there any way I can have the windows stay put or gather into my desktop visibly after I disconnect the display?

Thanks!

I've had the same issue. I unplug a projector from my MacBook Air and can't access any windows or the menubar. I've had to force the machine to power off and restart.

Next time it happens I'm going to try hitting Command-F2 to try to re-detect displays. I never knew what the keyboard shortcut was before.

I did some further research and found Stay by Cordless Dog and Display Maid, which was made by someone on the forums apparently.

I rather not have to turn to software to fix this problem though.

Try puting Mac to sleep by clicking apple logo than sleep than disconnect

that didn't work either. hmm I saw an applescript about how to fix this but it didn't run right. Does anyone know a way to run it?

what the heck your right, i just test on mine, i got that right from the apple website.

i just got my external yesterday so I'm new to this, i notice even changing from 1080p to 1600x900 will make my open windows move all over

it must have something to do with going from 1 resolution to another that screws up the windows positions

Command F2 (holding down Fn+Command+F2) gathers all windows onto my MacBook Air desktop after I've disconnected a projector. Are you sure that doesn't wok for you?

There's an application called Moom in MAS. You can rearrange your windows with or without the external display,, and then save separate snapshots in Moom. Then just click to choose a setting when you connect or disconnect your display. I found it useful. It charges $5.

It looks nice but doesn't seem to do what I need. I am looking for something that can lock windows in place when I disconnect my display and also resizes the windows. Sometimes the Finder or Chrome/Safari get squished when I unplug or connect my display.
