Upgrading to Lion from 10.5.8

Im currently running OS 10.5.8 on my 2008 Mac Mini, its 1gb ram version and runs ok, but it struggles with 1080p.

Will upgrading to Lion be a noticable upgrade on my video performance? Will I need to upgrade to 10.7 first or can I just buy Lion and do it?

Will be buying 2gb of RAM be a better option?

I doubt Lion will help you with your video performance especially with 1gb of RAM.

It's struggling partly because you need more RAM. You need to add RAM before you can run Lion.
General requirements
  • Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
  • 2GB of memory
  • OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
  • 7GB of available space
  • Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.

Not likely, as yours is more a hardware limitation.

Lion is Mac OS X 10.7. Snow Leopard is 10.6. You need to upgrade to Snow Leopard first (10.6.6) before you can access the Mac App Store to download Lion. Or you can buy the OS X Lion USB Thumb Drive.

Adding RAM will very likely give you a noticeable performance boost. If you have the 2007 model, you can go to 3GB of RAM.

  • By using Mactracker
  • By entering your serial number here to find specs for your model. (Be aware that some models can use more RAM than Apple shows. Check EveryMac or MacTracker to verify.)
