Digital AV Adapter Full screen on tv?

I'm thinking about buying the Apple Digital AV Adapter for my ipad 2,

But does the picture fill the tv screen at aspect ratio 16:9 or is it the same as when using airplay with apple tv mirroring: only outputting a boxed 4:3 scren ratio?

It looks like it outputs the exact resolution, except when playing content/media where it will scale it to the TV.

I've attached some very quick photos for you - if you want a bit more detail let me know.
Specs are iPad 2, 23" Monitor @ 1920x1080 native res.

Have you tried using the netflix app? I was wondering if that fills the tv screen?
