I fixed my MacBook Pro in my sig some time ago because its optical drive wasn't working and its airport wasn't working. They said that they'll fix everything for $300 total. He said that the whole screen would have to be replaced for $800, so a flat fee of $300 sounded like a good deal. They did replace the battery but they did not replace the screen, just the Airport card (I knew that they didn't because it still had the same slight dent on the side of the screen)

So they got $300 for replacing the airport card (or fixing it) and the battery and the optical drive. Is that a fair deal?

$300 sounds like a fair deal actually. The battery costs $129 alone, the optical drive would probably cost around the same, and airport card around maybe $50.

I feel that I should have just bought a new $300 computer for portable computing and then used the MBP as a desktop with display.

So they agreed to include the display replacement for $300?

"screen replacement" sounds like just the panel, not the lid of the laptop.

Battery-$129
ODD-$80
Airport-$30
Total:
$249

The OP got a terrible deal.

Screen replacement is the entire display assembly. I know because I've had my display replaced three times under warranty.

I don't understand what the screen has to do with anything. Is it broke, or not? Why was the $800 number even thrown out there?

Fixing the other things was probably worth the $300. Just because sometimes it's cheaper to buy another computer rather than repair one doesn't mean anyone was tricked.

If it could have been fixed for $250 then I guess it's not too terrible a deal, just $50 dollar lost.

Yeah, he totally got ripped off, payed an extra $50 to get everything installed.....

Guess if you can't get free labor you better never get any work done, because you're being ripped off!
