iMessage Not Verifying Emails

Hi, just a question. My iMessage doesn't recognize the correct email addresses or contact details of my friends even if I confirmed that they are indeed the correct Apple IDs. The messages are either sent as MMS or normal SMS and the blue bubble doesn't appear

Do we both need to be online at the same time for the iMessage to recognize my friend's email address?
